Questions & Answers
Why did you choose this path? Why psychotherapy?
I have always been a curious person, ever since I was a child and I have always loved interacting and listening to other people’s stories, but this was only the beginning. When I actually started studying it in college I realized I would love to find out more and practice it later on. It was only when I did my Master’s degree in counselling and started my placement in schools that I realized the passion I had in working with children and young people. It is so challenging and yet there is no other profession that can be as satisfying and fulfilling, no other job that provides as many opportunities for continual growth and learning.
Although you started your career in Romania you have decided to move to London? What made you make this decision?
When I started practicing under supervision there were several modalities and every single one was coming from abroad (UK or USA). Most of my student books were in English and at a certain point I asked myself what were these people doing differently. How were they practicing? I wanted to immerse myself into their practice and learn what this difference meant and then practice it better. I guess this was the very first thought that made me take the step and set off on this journey.
What is your favorite thing about working in the mental health field?
I reckon it is more than just one thing. It is very hard to pick just one. When we work in this field we are offered the opportunity to live different lives through the relationships we have with our clients. It is a journey into the unknown with many obstacles along the way, it is draining and uplifting at the same time. As a therapist I hear stories so amazing that make ‘game of thrones’ seem boring by comparison. In this journey we become companions to people who are on the verge of making significant transformations in their life, and this changes us as well. I think the most uplifting thought in this profession is that we go to sleep at night knowing that, in some way, we have made a difference in people’s lives.
